Look but don't touch! These white-marked tussock moth caterpillars have stinging tufts of barbed hairs that can cause irritation and rashes if touched. They can also defoliate small shrubs with ease. When they're done eating, they make cocoons and emerge as moths a couple of weeks later. Female moths are flightless, and will then lay eggs on their own cocoons. There can be two or three generations per year. Some of their favorite host plants are oak, hackberry, cherry, and willow, but they can be found on a wide variety of trees and shrubs. You can control these pests with Thuricide (for immature caterpillars less than one inch long) or Spinosad (for larger caterpillars).
